How to have a good divorce

When many New York couples think about divorce, images of couples yelling and fighting likely come to mind. While some divorcing couples certainly engage in this type of highly emotional and contentious behavior, many more take steps to have a peaceable and amicable divorce.

While the term good divorce may seem like an oxymoron, there are steps divorcing spouses can take to help make the divorce process less stressful and harmful for all involved parties. Taking steps to ensure for a good divorce are especially important for those couples with children.

For any couple who chooses to divorce, there were obviously issues and problems within a marriage and relationship that lead a couple to make that decision. When going through a divorce, it's normal and healthy to have negative feelings and emotions. It's not, however, normal or healthy to allow these negative feelings and emotions to dominate the divorce process.

While it may prove difficult, divorcing individuals would be wise to approach the divorce process as a business transaction. The decision has been made that a marriage isn't working and a divorce is simply the final step in making that decision. Approaching divorce this way may help an individual move past all the hurt, anger and resentment harbored towards an ex-spouse and instead focus on their own future.

For those divorcing couples who share children, it's important to realize that, for better or worse, their ex-spouse will always be part of their life and family. Children forever bind parents together and there will always be occasions in life that require the attention of both parents. For these reasons, divorced parents must work to create a relationship with one another that is void of past regrets and instead revolves around providing for the needs of a shared child.
