A parenting plan you agree on in New York

The most important thing when going through a divorce in New York is to keep your children's interests at the heart of every decision that you make. As you and your spouse split up, you need to create a parenting arrangement that gives the children the family life that they deserve and that they need. It should also be something that you and your spouse agree upon, if possible, but the children need to come even before the two of you.

Now, there are doubtlessly going to be things that you and your spouse do not agree on; perhaps you want to have the children during the holidays, and so does your husband or wife. However, the best way to begin is actually to look at the opposite side of things. Attempt to figure out what you already agree on and put that into the plan.

For example, perhaps you both like the doctor that the children have, and you want to keep using him or her in the future. Perhaps you both live in the same area even though you're splitting up, and so you want the children to go to the same school. Maybe you agree on what religion the children should be raised in, if any. These are all key parts of the parenting plan, and hammering them out first means that you can easily see what things have to get sorted out when you don't agree.

In many cases, divorce mediation may need to be used on some of these points. A court can help to create the plan objectively. Make sure, if you do this, that you know what rights you have regarding child custody and other aspects of the parenting plan.
