The value of establishing paternity and gaining fathers' rights

Whichever way one chooses to view the situation, there seems to be a lot of hurdles in the way of fathers who are looking to claim their rights as a dad. Often, the child's mother is against the notion and since men don't carry and give birth to children, it can be a challenge to establish fatherhood.

Despite the challenges associated with gaining fatherhood rights, it is worth it in the long term as all active dads know. To raise and shape the children of our future is an important responsibility that no one should miss out on. For unmarried fathers who are looking to claim their rights, there are no better ways to start than establishing your paternity. This provides irrefutable proof that you are the biological father of the child in question and New York City courts take this aspect of fatherhood quite seriously.

There are two ways to establish paternity in New York. The first way is relatively simple when both parents are cooperative. All you have to do is get together with the child's mother and sign an Acknowledgment of Paternity form. These are readily available in hospitals, birth registrar offices and child support offices. It states that both parties agree that the man is the child's father.

The second way is a little more complicated but still worth it in the end. It involves petitioning the court to determine paternity. This is typically done via genetic testing with genetic material from the mother, the child and the putative father. If the testing reveals that the alleged father is indeed responsible for the child's paternity, the court will issue a document declaring the child's paternity.
