Why is August one of the top 2 months for divorce?

A recent study found that the two most "popular" months in the year for divorce are March and August. As we reach the end of August, it seems like a good time to discuss why the end of summer marks the beginning of the end for so many marriages. In one word, it's "vacations."

In the study, sociologists who examined 14 years' worth of divorce data said that often couples go into a summer vacation getaway with the hope that it will improve their relationship and ease the tensions between them. Instead, they often return home with their hopes dashed and make the decision to end their marriage.

The other month that ranked highest for divorces was March. Researchers determined that this month, like August, followed the end of the season when couples -- particularly those with children -- were most likely to be together for holidays and time off from work.

Too much togetherness during these holiday and vacation times can amplify the stresses already present in a relationship. Troubled couples head into these holiday and vacation times with hope for their relationship, but find that they actually "intensify dissatisfaction or discord past a breaking point."

If you and/or your spouse is contemplating divorce, it's wise to begin to get things in order -- particularly if the two of you have considerable assets that will need to be divided. Even if you're able to work things out, it's better to be prepared than not. An experienced New York family law attorney can provide advice to help you protect yourself and your financial future if and when your marriage ends.
