Mel Gibson puts the 'high' in high asset divorce

When it comes to high assets in a divorce settlement, the assets in question usually don't get much higher than Mel Gibson's. Movie fans in New York have probably watched Gibson over the years, observing his successes as well as his personal debacles. Now Gibson is making headlines over this month's divorce settlement with his former wife, Robyn. Their celebrity split is said to be the costliest one yet publicized.

Mel's estimated net worth is over $800 million, with assets including a private island in Fiji, properties in the United States, Australia and Costa Rica, and lots of income from movies. The former couple, who were married in 1980, apparently did not create a prenuptial agreement, and the actor will pay approximately $400 million -- half of his fortune -- to his ex-wife. Robyn may also receive half of the pension Mel built up during the time they were together.

The husband and wife split up back in 2006 following the actor's notorious arrest for DUI. In 2009, right after pictures emerged of Mel with Russian pianist Oksana Grigorieva, Robyn filed for divorce. Gibson and Grigorieva went on to have a child together, but they split up in 2010. Domestic violence was said to be a factor in that breakup. Mel also has seven children with Robyn.

His divorce was made official in 2010, and negotiations over the division of assets continued until just recently.

As this case makes clear, property division involving high assets generally requires significant negotiation. New Yorkers who are confronted with the complex division of marital property should seek out the proper legal assistance to ensure a fair and equitable settlement.
