Custody battle brewing for Bristol Palin

Before former republican presidential nominee John McCain named her as his 2008 vice presidential running mate, few Texans had likely heard the name Sarah Palin. While active in both local and state politics in Alaska, Palin and her family were subjected to both national and international scrutiny during the 2008 presidential campaign. While Palin is often viewed as a controversial figure, it was her teenage daughter Bristol who was the subject of some of the harshest criticism.

In 2008, the then 19-year-old Bristol appeared at the republican national convention noticeably pregnant. Accompanied by her 19-year-old fiancé, Levi Johnston, the two soon-to-be teen parents were thrust into the public spotlight which has yet to fade.

Shortly after the birth of their son, Tripp, Bristol and Levi split. While the couple briefly reconciled during 2010, they soon split for good. Since that time, both young parents have relied upon their names and fame to garner lucrative television and magazine offers. Palin has retained physical and primary custody of the couple's four-year-old son with Levi being granted visitation rights.

More recently, however, Levi filed a petition seeking equal custody of his son. In response, Bristol countered that Johnston has shown little interest in his son who he rarely sees and is nearly $67,000 behind in child support payments. A judge will likely take these factors into consideration when making any changes to the existing custody arrangement.

Child custody disputes similar to this one play out every day among New York parents. For those parents seeking to modify a custody agreement or enforce a child support order, an attorney can both provide valuable advice and assistance.
