New York celebrity couple embroiled in complex divorce

The divorce and custody battle between entrepreneur and media personality Bethenny Frankel and businessman Jason Hoppy shows no sign of abating. The couple pulled the plug on their marriage in December 2013 after nearly three years that were documented by two reality shows about their burgeoning relationship, wedding and marriage.

Frankel has petitioned for primary custody of their four-year-old daughter while Hoppy seeks joint custody. The two faced off this week at a hearing in a New York courtroom where Frankel claimed Hoppy had threatened her.

Allegedly, her estranged husband said, "I'm going to destroy you. I'm going to have you and your publicist crying and crumbling in a corner... you don't know what it's like to have a family, you'll never have a family." The former reality star repeated his words as she testified through her tears.

This is a complex divorce due to the visibility of the high-profile couple, who so publicly carried on their relationship in front of millions of TV viewers. To complicate things further, Frankel has major business assets and revenue from her line of Skinnygirl cocktails.

Both are accusing the other of being hungry for fame. Hoppy's attorney accused Frankel of using their daughter as a career prop and says that she is attempting to "relegate the father of her child to a walking sperm bank."

The couple also differ on dietary concerns for the child. Frankel follows a vegan diet and was feeding her child the same, while Hoppy fixes her bacon and other animal proteins. Another bone of contention is Hoppy taking the child to Catholic Masses against Frankel's wishes. They agreed to baptize the baby as Catholic to appease Hoppy's parents but had no plans to raise her in the church.

A number of lawyers on both sides will accompany the two to their next hearing on June 11. As is the solution for many couples, mediation might help them learn to dial down their acrimony toward one another in order to keep the best interest of their daughter in mind.
