Former Knick Felton finalizes divorce settlement

A former player for the New York Knicks has finally settled his bitter divorce, with negotiations in the matter ending on July 3. The player, Raymond Felton, had been embroiled in a difficult divorce case with his 26-year-old ex-wife. The couple was able to pursue a settlement outside of court, but specifics of the agreement have not been released.

The breakup included stories of dramatic incidents in which Felton allegedly brandished a weapon while arguing with his ex, Ariane Raymondo. That woman, a student at Fordham Law School, turned the man into officers in February, presenting them with the firearm that he had reportedly waved at her during particularly heated exchanges. The man has since reached a plea deal with Manhattan prosecutors that will allow him to stay out of jail.

The contentious divorce also included allegations that Felton had cheated on Raymondo on numerous occasions. She told police officers that the man was a "serial cheater" and had extramarital affairs with more than one other woman. The couple was married in 2012, and the woman filed for divorce in February.

Although the facts that the man reportedly cheated on the woman and brandished a weapon are admittedly scandalous, such information may actually have little bearing on the outcome of a divorce. In most cases, property division is designed to be professional and business-like, essentially terminating the marriage contract in a neutral fashion. Someone who cheats on their spouse is unlikely to be financially punished during the property division phase of a divorce, because morality is not a consideration in a no-fault breakup. Legal professionals can provide additional information about property division guidelines for couples who are facing contentious breakups.
