Garner, Affleck split after 10 years of marriage

After a decade of marriage, Jennifer Garner, 43, and Ben Affleck, 42, are headed for divorce court. June 29 was their 10th anniversary. The couple has three children, two girls and a boy, age 3, 6 and 9.

The actors first met when they costarred in "Pearl Harbor," released in 2001. In 2003, they costarred once again in "Daredevil" and soon became an item.

The two released a joint statement to PEOPLE magazine, stating, "After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce. We . . . [are committed[ to co-parenting our children."

An unnamed source indicated that the celebrity couple intended to use mediation to hash out the details of their split.

During happier times, the couple interacted as a family unit in Los Angeles, undertaking prosaic domestic tasks like carpooling, shuttling the kids to various after-school activities and meeting up for coffee.

But there were hints of potential problems, such as when Garner gave an interview to InStyle last year. She called their marriage "mindful" and noted that it had passed the "courtship" phase, and that was all right with her. She described the two as "making an effort to be together, do things at the same time, and be loving."

When high profile celebrity couples divorce, many seek out mediation as an alternative that allows them to keep the details of their split private. By coming to accord on their own, with the assistance of their own attorneys and a neutral mediator, they avoid the necessity of having their financial records and potentially embarrassing details about their marriage becoming part of the public record.
