Respect the rights of children going through divorce

As a father fighting for custody of your child, it is imperative that you understand that the court is looking out for the best interests of your child. The judge in your case considers the rights of children in divorce, which may include:

-- The right to express love for both parents without interference from the other parent or others.

-- The right to live in a secure and safe environment and have their needs met.

-- Having a place to keep their clothing, toys and other possessions at both parents' homes.

-- Never being used as messengers or couriers between the divorcing spouses.

-- Maintaining positive connections with grandparents and extended family members on both sides.

-- Having the stability of daily and weekly routines that they can visually refer to for reassurance.

-- Sharing conversations with their other parent without eavesdropping or recording.

-- Having reasonable boundaries in both parents' homes, which may differ to some extent from the other, yet still remain predictable in that home.

-- Not being subjected to hostilities between battling ex-spouses or being present during arguments.

-- Allowing them to possess and display photos of both parents within their private space in the parents' home.

-- Never to be subjected to interrogations upon their return from the other parent's home about their interactions and activities there.

Divorce issues can be difficult for children to process, just as it may be for the adults. If you see that your child is struggling to come to terms with the new normal in his or her world, ask your family law attorney for the names of some reputable children and family counselors who may help your son or daughter get back on track.
