Compassionate About People. Passionate About The Law.

What can a divorce concierge do for you?

When many people divorce, they suddenly find themselves having to deal with things that they never gave a thought to before because their spouse handled them. That can be frightening -- particularly if you were married for a long time and haven't lived alone in many years (or ever).

That's where divorce concierges come in. They may go by different titles and take on varying responsibilities, but the idea is that they they help people manage their lives as they begin to move forward as a newly-single people -- for a price, of course.

One New York divorce concierge whose business is called Blackbook Divorce, says that she sees herself as a "temporary fixer." Her clients "need someone when they suddenly have no one." She and other divorce concierges help people with everything from getting new insurance to selling their homes to finding summer camps for their kids. They can also connect clients with other professionals, such as financial advisors and psychiatrists.

While hiring a divorce concierge may seem like an unnecessary extravagance, for those who can afford it, the cost may well be worthwhile. The New York concierge's ex-husband, from whom she's amicably divorced, says, "I have seen men whose careers fly off the rails amid a divorce." One divorce attorney notes that "even moneyed spouses, the so-called masters of the universe, need a lot of help before, during and after the divorce process."

The needs filled by a divorce concierge tend to be somewhat gender-stereotypical. The New York concierge says that she often helps men with issues tied to their parenting responsibilities and with setting up their new households. Women more often need help with financial, insurance and real estate issues.

While everyone can't afford a "fixer" at a rate of hundreds of dollars per hour to help them get their new life on track after a divorce, it's important to seek out professionals in the areas where you do need help. Your New York family law attorney can put you in touch with people who can make your life easier.
