Five myths about fathers' rights supporters

You have probably heard of the fathers' rights movement, but do you know what it stands for? Here are five common misconceptions about child custody in New York and what people who support fathers' rights are seeking.

1. The law gives preference to mothers. New York changed its family laws statutes decades ago to make them gender neutral. Judges are not supposed to give preference to one parent based on their gender.

2. New York family law courts are fair to fathers. Unfortunately, mothers still get sole custody most of the time, likely due to an outdated societal bias that believes that mothers raise children while fathers work.

3. Children need their mothers more than their fathers. Most parenting experts say that children are more likely to thrive when they have strong relationships with both parents.

4. Fathers' rights advocates are anti-women. This is a myth. There are both men and women in the fathers' rights movement. They do not want to take mothers out of their children's lives; they just want the child custody system to be as fair as the law says it is supposed to be.

5. Fathers' rights advocates want equal custody in all cases. What we want is for all parents to get equal consideration in child custody and parenting matters. In many cases, it is in the child's best interest to spend equal time with both parents. In other cases, it is not. There are many factors for judges to consider, but gender should not be one of them.

We hope this clears up some myths about child custody and fathers' rights. Parents looking for more information about their legal rights and obligations should speak to a family law attorney.
