High-profile couple asks for privacy in divorce

The troubled marriage and break-up of former congressman Anthony Weiner and Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin have been fodder for the press here in New York and worldwide for some time. However, the couple is now seeking to keep the details of their divorce private.

The divorce filing is listed as "Anonymous v. Anonymous" to help protect their privacy and that of their 5-year-old son. However, that didn't keep the press from showing up in at Manhattan Supreme Court recently where the estranged couple sat together. The judge acknowledged the media attention, saying that "despite your attempt to keep this anonymous, it does not appear to be anonymous."

Although his cyber-cheating has been public knowledge for some time now, the 41-year-old Abedin filed for divorce from her 53-year-old husband after he pleaded guilty earlier this year to sending sexually-explicit material to a minor. He's awaiting sentencing later this month.

The couple, who left the courtroom in the same vehicle, seem willing to work out the details of their divorce amicably. The judge encouraged an amicable resolution, saying, "I certainly would encourage you to try to work out a plan together with your attorneys' assistance." However, he has yet to rule on the request by Abedin's attorney to "keep these proceedings secret to the extent your honor will allow."

Most divorcing couples don't have to worry about the details of their divorce becoming fodder for the tabloids. However, that doesn't mean that you don't have a right to keep your divorce records from being available to anyone who may choose to search for them. Your New York family law attorney can help you work to maintain as much privacy as possible during this difficult time in your life.
