Study: Divorce rate down in the United States

Research suggests that the U.S. has seen a substantial drop in the divorce rate in recent years.

The study was from the University of Maryland. It reviewed survey data from the U.S. Census Bureau. Specifically, it looked at what women survey respondents reported regarding marital status to estimate divorce rates in the U.S. for the 2008 to 2016 period.

Based on this review, the study estimated that the nation’s divorce rate fell 18 percent over this period.

The study also indicates that trends in divorce rate over this period varied greatly among age groups.

For example, not all ages saw a divorce rate drop. Older age groups generally saw steady, or even rising rates.

While the 35-44 age group experienced a rate drop, the biggest downward movement in divorce rate was among younger Americans.

Why is the divorce rate down so much among millennials? One thing that might be contributing is millennials waiting longer to tie the knot.

Now, divorce rate is not the only marriage-related area where different generations can be experiencing very different things. What age group a couple is in can impact things such as what particular challenges could be likely to arise within their marriage and what issues could likely be major ones for them if they were to divorce. When individuals are getting divorced, whatever their age, it can be important for them to adopt a strategy that addresses the issues specific to their divorce in a way that best stands up for their overall interests. Divorce lawyers can help divorcing individuals in New York develop such well-tailored strategies.
